Distinct Moroccan Art Mosaic: Zillij

One of the most well-known Moroccan art is called Zillij. It is a unique form of mosaic art that has been practiced in Morocco during the early times. This complex and very creative tiling pattern has covered the walls, columns and fountains of Morocco’s imperial cities.

Mosaic art is the art of creating images from small pieces of glass or stone. This piece of art is mostly used to beautify their buildings and homes. It is also used to decorate their mosques, school and historic sites.

Compared to other styles of mosaic, Zillij is an Islamic art that is distinct to its designs of geometric shapes and patterns rather than incorporating portraits or landscape characteristic of other form of mosaic. Learning the art of this mosaic is a lifetime attempt since it will take years to learn the technique of this difficult yet very beautiful craft.

These pieces of artisan mosaic come with a price which mainly depends on its quality and uniqueness. Many Moroccan’s consider the blue and white mosaic to be the finest works of artisans.
